Before you can get into the more intricate poker rules and the betting and the terminology used, such as “the flop” or “the river,” you must know what makes up a winning hand. This is the combination of cards that can win you the pot. First is a Straight Flush, which is five cards in numerical order that are entirely of the same suit. The highest combination of this flush is the Royal Flush, which is A-K-Q-J-T. This is the best hand possible, yet the odds of being dealt this hand are very low.
The next best hand is Four-of-a-Kind. This is four cards of any number. The best hand you can have in this situation is A-A-A-A-K. Obviously, you cannot get Four-of-a-Kind in the same suit.
